Woman dies as old building collapses in Kolkata

A 200-year-old three-storey building collapsed in the Jorabagan area of North Kolkata on Tuesday morning following continuous rainfall. One woman, identified as 60-year-old Urmila Sahu, died in the incident after being trapped under the debris.

Rescue operations at the site

The incident occurred around 5:00 am at 31, Brajadulal Street. Local reports stated the building had been showing signs of structural weakness since Monday morning. Police and disaster management teams rescued 20 people from the site. Authorities conducted a thorough search to ensure no other individuals remained trapped under the collapsed structure.

Safety concerns for old buildings

This incident has highlighted concerns regarding the safety of dilapidated structures in the city. Local residents reported that the building was in poor condition before it fell. Similar incidents have occurred in the Jorabagan area previously, including a building collapse on Kashinath Dutta Street in June. The administration is currently investigating the cause of the collapse and the structural status of the building. Further updates on safety protocols for aging infrastructure can be monitored through official channels at West Bengal Government.
