Wildfire Threatens Border Villages in Manipur and Mizoram

A fast-moving forest fire has ignited along the dry brush ridges located on the border between the Pherzaw district of southern Manipur and northern Mizoram, emitting dense smoke over isolated tribal hamlets. High seasonal winds have driven the fire through dried bamboo brakes and pine slopes, posing a direct threat to multiple subsistence settlements that rely on neighboring community forests for foraging and firewood.

Emergency Response by Local Residents

Local village defense teams and youth volunteers responded by using machetes and hand beaters to clear emergency firebreaks around the village perimeters. These groups worked throughout the night in an effort to prevent the blaze from reaching thatch dwellings. Although forestry teams from nearby blocks were notified, their efforts were severely constrained by the extreme slope gradients and a lack of vehicular roads, which prevented the deployment of mechanical firefighting equipment.

Habitat Destruction and Preventive Bans

The fire has resulted in the destruction of hectares of natural habitat. In response to the crisis, local traditional councils have implemented temporary bans on charcoal kilns and agricultural burning across the frontier ridges until the dry-season winds begin to subside.
