West Bengal Weather Alert Heavy Rain Forecast In Many Districts

The India Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall across various districts in South Bengal due to a new low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal. This weather system, which developed near the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast, is expected to intensify and move in a north-westerly direction, causing significant rainfall through Thursday and Friday. According to the original report by Hindusthan Samachar, the intensity of the rain is expected to decrease starting August 15, though showers will likely continue in most parts of the region.

Heavy Rainfall Warning for South Bengal Districts

On Thursday, Kolkata and all districts of South Bengal are expected to witness light to moderate rain, with several areas facing the risk of heavy downpours. The weather department has specifically warned that Bankura and West Midnapore could receive over 20 centimeters of extremely heavy rainfall. Other regions, including Purulia, Jhargram, East Midnapore, East and West Bardhaman, and Hooghly, are also likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall in specific locations. Residents in these areas are advised to stay alert as the rainfall is accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Weather Conditions and Cloud Formation

Kolkata is expected to remain under cloud cover for the next 24 hours, with intermittent spells of light to moderate rain and a possibility of lightning. The intensity of the rain may increase during late evenings and early morning hours, reaching rates of two to three centimeters per hour. Satellite data has captured unusual cloud formations, with cumulus clouds reaching heights of up to 18 kilometers, which is significantly higher than the standard 12 to 14 kilometers. These extreme weather indicators suggest a high level of atmospheric instability across the southern districts.

Forecast for Friday and Beyond

The threat of heavy rain persists into Friday, particularly in Purulia, where very heavy rainfall is predicted. Districts including Bankura, Jhargram, West Midnapore, West Bardhaman, and Birbhum will also see heavy rainfall in various spots. While the southern parts of the state face significant weather activity, North Bengal may only experience scattered rainfall, as the current low-pressure system is not expected to have a major impact on the northern region at this time.
