West Bengal School Syllabus Changes Planned for Classes 1 to 10
The West Bengal education department is set to hold a three-day residential camp in Kolkata to finalize updates and modifications to the school curriculum. Members of the curriculum committee have been invited to participate in this event, which aims to complete all necessary discussions regarding syllabus changes by the third week of this month. This initiative focuses on finalizing revisions for school textbooks across various subjects through dedicated meetings. According to a report by Hindusthan Samachar, the committee will review each subject individually before reaching a final decision on the required adjustments.
Focus on Classes One to Ten
The current phase of curriculum revision is restricted to students from class one to class ten. Plans for the higher secondary level, covering classes eleven and twelve, will be addressed in a subsequent phase. The committee has decided against making major changes to the textbooks due to time constraints. Instead, the focus will remain on minor updates such as changing specific words or adding and removing a limited number of chapters.
Printing Schedule and Deadlines
Education department sources indicate that the committee intends to keep changes to within 10 percent of the current textbook content. This limitation is necessary to ensure that new books can be printed and distributed to schools across the state before the start of the next academic session. The final books must be ready by December 1 to ensure delivery to schools before January 2. To meet this deadline, the curriculum committee is required to send the revised content for printing by September 15.
Future Curriculum Planning
The curriculum committee held its first meeting on August 4 at Vidyasagar Bhavan in Bidhannagar to discuss the overall framework for these revisions. Because a comprehensive overhaul requires extensive review and detailed discussions, the committee has opted for limited modifications at this time. Large-scale changes to the state school curriculum are not expected to take place before 2028. Committee members have been instructed to bring written proposals and suggestions to the upcoming residential camp for final approval by subject experts.
