Two truck drivers lost their lives in a major road accident on the Teesta bridge in Jalpaiguri on Thursday night. A truck going to Bhutan broke down on the bridge and the driver was repairing the vehicle when a speeding container truck hit it from behind.
The impact was so severe that the front part of the container went inside the rear of the parked truck, trapping both drivers inside.
Police and fire departments rushed to the spot and used gas cutters to pull the drivers out before sending them to the Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared them dead.
Police are trying to identify the deceased drivers while traffic on the national highway has returned to normal.
