Two Dead After Landslide Hits Sikkim Road Clearing Crew

A landslide in the Namchi district of Sikkim has resulted in the death of two people and left two others injured while they were clearing road debris. The incident occurred on Saturday morning near the Barmeli Bridge in the Barfung area of Phamtam. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has expressed his condolences regarding the loss of life caused by this natural disaster.

Details of the Deceased and Injured

The two individuals who lost their lives in the landslide have been identified as 18-year-old Lal Bahadur Rai and 61-year-old Man Bahadur Gurung. According to the Chief Minister's Press Secretary, Ugen Tamang, the two injured persons are currently receiving medical attention. One injured individual was sent to the Namchi District Hospital and is in stable condition, while the second person is being treated at the Primary Health Centre in Rawangla.

Cause of the Incident

Reports confirm that the victims were part of a work crew actively removing debris from a road. The path had been blocked by an earlier landslide located between Sada village and Phamtam village. The workers were struck by a sudden second landslide while they were in the process of clearing the area, which led to the fatal accident.

Following the tragedy, local authorities arrived at the location to inspect the impact of the landslide and oversee the situation. Local MLA Rixal Dorji Bhutia and Namchi District Magistrate Anupa Tamling visited the site to assess the damage and coordinate the ongoing response efforts.
