Tripura Plans to Use Idle Tea Land for Industries

Tripura is planning to use unused tea estate land to build new industrial parks and commercial projects. This new step comes as the state faces land shortages because 70 percent of the area is reserved forest. Official data shows that only 6,000 hectares out of 12,832 hectares are currently used for active tea growing.

New Law Allows Land Use Change

The state cabinet cleared the Tripura Land Revenue and Land Reforms Amendment Bill on September 25, 2026. This law lets people use vacant tea garden land for tourism, commercial farming, and industrial townships with government approval. Chief Minister Manik Saha supported this plan on October 7, 2026, to help bring in private investment and create jobs.

Labor Groups Raise Concerns

Trade unions like the Tripura Tea Mazdoor Sangh have asked the government to protect worker rights and livelihoods. Labor leaders want to make sure that any industrial growth also provides secure jobs for local communities. Officials state the plan will boost manufacturing without touching main farming land or forests.
