Rail connectivity linking the Barak Valley, Tripura, and Mizoram to the rest of India has been suspended following the derailment of four laden wagons of a goods train within a curved tunnel on the Lumding–Badarpur hill section. The wheels of the rear wagons left the tracks, resulting in damage to track ballast and the severance of emergency signaling cables located within the tunnel.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) responded to the incident by
deploying emergency relief trains and heavy hydraulic rerailing cranes from Lumding and Silchar. The disruption forced the suspension of multiple long-distance passenger services and incoming freight trains transporting essential commodities, causing hundreds of passengers to be stranded at intermediate stations.
Preliminary technical inspections suggest that the derailment was likely caused by shifting track alignment and loose rock strata inside the tunnel.
Track clearance operations proceeded throughout the morning despite heavy rainfall, with engineering teams working to repair warped rails to facilitate the resumption of low-speed rail operations.
