Two homemakers died after being hit by a fast car while out for a morning walk in Jalpaiguri on Wednesday. The accident took place on National Highway 17 near the Chel bridge.
The victims were identified as Deepmala Thapa and Sumi Devi Prasad, residents of Devipara in Uladlabari of Malbazar block.
Both women were walking along the side of the highway early in the morning when a speeding small car hit them. The driver fled from the spot after the incident.
Local residents rushed to the spot after hearing the sound of the crash and found both women lying on the road in critical condition. They had already passed away by the time help arrived. Police reached the location after receiving information about the incident.
Police are currently investigating the vehicle involved and the cause of the accident.
