A Tipra Motha Party candidate suffered a gunshot injury during an alleged firing incident in the Gomati district of Tripura. The incident took place during polling for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council Village Committee elections on Monday.
The wounded candidate was identified as Khachindra Reang, who contested from Ward No. 2 of the Gamaria Village Committee.
Police stated that one person sustained a gunshot injury while two others were also hurt when unidentified persons opened fire.
All three injured persons were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
Khachindra Reang was later referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala for advanced medical care.
The incident created tension in the area as local residents and supporters staged protests and blocked roads to demand strict action.
Police deployed additional security personnel in the affected region to bring the situation under control and started an investigation to find the culprits.
Election Context
The voting took place across 587 Village Committees using ballot papers for the first such election in a decade.
The State Election Commission recorded a voter turnout of around 79 percent during the day, with voting mostly peaceful except for the isolated violence in the Gomati district.
