Three Meghalaya UDP MLAs Apply To Merge With Ruling NPP

Three United Democratic Party legislators in Meghalaya have submitted their merger application to join the ruling National People’s Party. Paul Lyngdoh, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, and Nujorki Sungoh met with the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Thomas A Sangma, in his office to formalise their decision to join the NPP.

The Assembly Speaker confirmed that he received the merger application and related resolutions from the legislators. He stated that he will examine the documents, seek legal opinion, and issue a ruling according to prescribed procedures. The Speaker clarified that recognising the merger is not a mere formality even though the House previously recognised another party merger.

Verification And Next Steps

The Speaker noted that the merger meets the two-thirds numerical requirement but requires careful legal and procedural checks. He must verify if each member agreed voluntarily. While two legislators appeared before him, Nujorki Sungoh was away for medical treatment. The Speaker will seek advice on whether online verification is possible or if physical presence is needed. If approved, the NPP strength in the Assembly will rise to 36.
