Three laborers died and three others were critically injured in an industrial accident in Sethawn village, Kolasib district, on Saturday, September 19, 2026. The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 PM during construction work for the National Highway Expansion Corridor along NH-306, the Assam-Mizoram highway.
A heavy steel scaffolding pipe came into contact with a live high-tension overhead power line while workers were shifting an electric pole near RTP Farm. The victims included 16-year-old Thianhum from Myanmar, 18-year-old Lalrinawma from Mamit district, and 20-year-old Lalruatfela from Manipur. All three deceased resided in Bawngkawn, Aizawl. The three injured workers were taken to the nearest district hospital for trauma care.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the incident. The highway project is implemented by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), with laborers employed by subcontractor C Vanlalhriat. Surviving workers stated they attempted to shut down the power supply at three points before starting work. Authorities are examining whether the crew inadvertently switched off the incorrect Gang Operated Air Break Switch. Infrastructure projects must adhere to strict safety protocols under the
