Political tension has increased in Jalpaiguri just before the new civic board formation. Armed men allegedly attacked and threatened the homes of several councilors who support Mamata Banerjee late Friday night. This incident has created uncertainty about the board formation meeting that was planned for Saturday. A meeting was scheduled at the Jalpaiguri Municipality on Saturday for the board formation.
Tapan Banerjee, the councilor of ward number 15 who was nominated for the chairman post, reported an attack on his house at around three in the morning. His wife Sangeeta Banerjee stated that the attackers also fired shots in the air. Tapan Banerjee claimed that this attack was done to stop the board formation.
Complaints of threats and vandalism of CCTV cameras at the homes of Mamata-supporting councilors were also reported from wards 18, 19, and 21. These events have created an atmosphere of fear and tension in the city. Meanwhile, the sub-divisional administration sent a letter to the municipality describing the current situation as sub judice and requested to postpone Saturday's board meeting.
