Tension Continues at Jadavpur University After Student Clash

Tension remains high at Jadavpur University in Kolkata following a clash between ABVP and leftist student organizations on Wednesday night. Police and central forces have been deployed in large numbers to maintain law and order in the university area.

Following the violence, a formal complaint was filed at the Jadavpur Police Station in the presence of local MLA Sharvari Mukhopadhyay. A case has been registered against 11 individuals from leftist groups under the Indian Penal Code and the SC/ST Act based on a complaint by a third-year engineering student. The university administration requested police assistance to remove outsiders from the campus to prevent further unrest.

Protests and Traffic Disruption

On Thursday, separate protest marches were organized by the Democratic Student Federation and the ABVP. Police blocked the student processions before they could reach the main university gates, leading to scuffles and the breaking of barricades. The protests caused significant traffic disruptions, leaving a school bus trapped in the area for some time.

Campus Security and Property Damage

University authorities closed all campus gates as a precautionary measure. Despite this, bottles and stones were thrown from outside gate number four, causing damage to a metal structure. Teachers have expressed concern over the damage to university property during these protests.

Background of the Conflict

The dispute began Wednesday night during a general meeting of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students Union. Both student groups have accused each other of initiating the violence, resulting in several injuries. Both ABVP and SFI leaders have issued statements blaming the opposing side for the escalation. Police are currently investigating the matter based on the complaints received from both parties.
