Seven high-risk glacial lakes have been identified in the Mago area of Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang district, creating a major Glacial Lake Outburst Flood risk for people living downstream.
The Arunachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, along with local disaster management teams and the state disaster response force, has launched
an extensive awareness and training programme on these flood risks. The campaign started at Mago village and covers vulnerable areas like Duri village and local Indian Army camps to inform residents about potential threats.
Officials explained the causes of glacial floods and estimated the time floodwaters would take to reach settlements.
Residents were trained on safe evacuation routes and the importance of establishing early-warning mechanisms to protect human lives and property during emergencies.
