Supreme Court Demands Manipur Report On Camp Deaths
The Supreme Court of India ordered the Manipur government to submit a detailed report on 25 unnatural deaths inside relief camps. This order aims to fix gaps in post-mortem procedures, compensation, and safety for displaced people.
Court Demands Answers From Manipur Government
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant led a bench that demanded specific documents from the Chief Secretary of Manipur. The state must file an affidavit explaining the cause of each of the 25 unnatural deaths. The court also questioned why post-mortems were done in only 20 of these cases.
Compensation And Safety Measures Questioned
The state must explain why families of the deceased got only Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 in compensation. Officials must also report on safety steps, medical care, and daily supplies in the camps. The Manipur State Legal Services Authority must file a separate status report and register First Information Reports for every unnatural death.
