SJDA to Audit 15 Years of Accounts Following Scam Allegations

The Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA) has announced a comprehensive audit of its financial records spanning the last 15 years to investigate alleged corruption involving approximately 200 crore rupees. This decision follows a recent administrative board meeting aimed at addressing past financial irregularities and setting a new course for regional development.

Investigation into Financial Irregularities

Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh confirmed that a committee led by a former judge will conduct an interim administrative investigation into the matter. The audit will cover all income and expenditure records from the past 15 years. Officials and individuals found involved in any financial misconduct will face strict legal action. The board emphasized that no one, regardless of their position, will be spared if found guilty of corruption.

New Development Projects for Siliguri

After a period of inactivity, the board meeting held under the chairmanship of Darjeeling District Magistrate Harishankar Panicker focused on resuming essential services. The authority has approved 100 crore rupees for new development projects including road construction, drainage systems, drinking water facilities, crematorium development, and modern street lighting. These projects are intended to restore and improve basic infrastructure for the citizens of Siliguri and Jalpaiguri.

Future Infrastructure and Expansion Plans

Following the monsoon season, the tender process for these new projects will officially commence. The board is also considering expanding the reach of SJDA to include areas like Nagrakata and Dhupguri by sending a formal proposal to the Urban Development Department. A plan is also in place to replace the old SJDA building near the Siliguri Bus Terminus with a new commercial complex after conducting discussions with the local traders.
