Siliguri Launches Road Safety Week 2026 for Traffic Awareness

The West Bengal government has officially launched the Road Safety Week 2026 in Siliguri to reduce road accidents and promote traffic rule awareness among residents. This special campaign, organized by the Siliguri Metropolitan Police, began on Monday and is scheduled to continue until August 9. The initiative aims to educate drivers and the general public on the importance of following traffic safety protocols throughout the city.

Launch and Awareness Activities

The program started at MMG More in Siliguri, where police officials provided information to the public regarding traffic rules and safety precautions. Following the launch, the police conducted an awareness drive across major areas of the city using tableaus and placards to display safety messages. During these sessions, officials emphasized the necessity of using helmets and seat belts while strictly discouraging speeding and the use of mobile phones while driving.

Official Presence and Safety Guidelines

Senior officials, including Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh, Siliguri Police Commissioner Akhilesh Chaturvedi, and DCP Kazi Shamsuddin Ahmed, were present at the opening event. The officials stated that road safety is a shared responsibility between the police and every citizen, noting that accidents can only be reduced through collective compliance with traffic laws. The campaign also specifically warned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol and highlighted the need to prioritize the safety of pedestrians on city roads.

Future Outreach Plans

According to administrative sources, the road safety campaign will continue with various programs scheduled over the coming days. These events are designed to reach a wider audience, including students from local schools and colleges, to foster a culture of responsible driving. The primary goal of this police-led initiative is to decrease the number of road accidents and ensure that the streets of Siliguri remain safe for all commuters.
