Residents in Siliguri are facing a major dispute after the railway gate near Phuleswari in Ward 24 was suddenly closed by railway authorities. Former mayor and MLA Asok Bhattacharya held a press conference at the Siliguri Journalists Club to raise serious concerns over the action.
According to Asok Bhattacharya, the railway department closed the gate late at night without following proper rules.
He stated that authorities must issue public notices, give a 30-day notice period, and hear public objections before taking such a step. Furthermore, opinions from the state government, district magistrate, and municipal corporation are required under standard procedures.
Leaders pointed out that alternative roads, subways, underpasses, or flyovers must be ready before closing any railway crossing.
Fears were also raised that keeping the gate closed during Durga Puja will increase traffic problems and public suffering.
Asok Bhattacharya demanded the immediate removal of barricades to reopen the railway gate and warned of a massive protest if the demand is ignored.
