Siliguri Municipal Corporation took action against illegal shops built under the Burdwan Road flyover on Sunday. The anti-encroachment drive started from Mahatma Gandhi More and ended at the other side of the new flyover.
The drive was conducted in the presence of police force to remove illegal occupation of government land and roads. According to municipal sources, these shops were built illegally on road land which was affecting traffic and movement of the public.
Some shop owners protested when the demolition started and claimed they were not given prior notice or enough time. However, many shop owners started removing their goods after learning about the drive, and municipal workers cleared the illegal shops with police presence.
