Siliguri Administration Takes Action Against Rising Vegetable Prices

The local administration and Siliguri Police Commissionerate have launched strict monitoring and inspection drives across city markets to address the recent surge in vegetable prices caused by the onset of the monsoon season. Officials are visiting various market areas to ensure that essential food items are sold at fair prices to the public.

Market Inspections and Price Checks

During a recent inspection at the Haiderpara market under the Bhaktinagar police station, authorities checked stock levels and verified current market rates. Officials interacted with both shopkeepers and customers to understand the ground reality and address grievances regarding the sudden price hike. Similar inspections have also been conducted in other regional markets to maintain price stability.

Current Vegetable Price List

Data collected during the inspection reveals that prices remain high for several essential kitchen staples. Potatoes are currently retailing between 20 to 30 rupees per kilogram, while onions are priced between 40 to 50 rupees per kilogram. Other vegetables like cabbage are selling for 20 to 30 rupees per kilogram, whereas items like pointed gourd, ladyfinger, brinjal, tomato, and cucumber are being sold at 60 to 80 rupees per kilogram. Additionally, spinach is priced at 100 to 120 rupees per kilogram, pumpkins at 50 rupees per piece, lemons at 5 rupees per piece, and green chilies at 30 rupees per quarter kilogram.

Warning Against Price Gouging

Following the inspections, the administration issued clear instructions to all vendors. Shopkeepers have been strictly warned against charging arbitrary prices by blaming the monsoon or poor weather conditions. The authorities have stated that selling essential goods at unfair rates or engaging in black marketing will result in strict legal action. The administration continues to monitor the markets to prevent further exploitation of consumers.
