Yakten village in East Sikkim officially launched as India's first rural Digital Nomad Hub on July 14, 2025. The project is called Nomad Sikkim and aims to mix high-speed technology with eco-tourism according to the official Sikkim Government Portal. The initiative was led by the Pakyong District Administration and the Sarvahitey NGO.
The hub uses solar-backed fiber networks with speeds up to 100 Mbps. Inverters and generators are used to keep the internet working all the time for remote workers. People who want to stay must apply through an app, and a local committee reviews all requests for stays from a few days to a month. Local Limbu and Bhutia families provide accommodation in eight upgraded homestays that include work desks, hot water, and traditional food. Details of the setup are also reported by
News On Air. Stay prices are around INR 1,100 per day, INR 6,000 per week, and INR 15,000 per month.
Mrs. Pamin Lepcha officially opened the site and suggested expanding the model to other areas. Pakyong District Collector Mr. Rohan Agawane stated that the plan matches the state policy to stabilize income for homestay owners. The project has support from the Asian Development Bank and the Sikkim Tourism and Civil Aviation Department. Gyan Bahadur Subba from the village tourism cooperative said the hub helps local families earn money. The project has a zero-waste system and is running a three-year pilot phase to check its economic and environmental impact.
