Sikkim High Court Bans Parking on Atal Setu Bridge

The Sikkim High Court has issued strict instructions to authorities in Sikkim and West Bengal to enforce a no-parking rule on the Atal Setu bridge located in Rangpo. This bridge is a vital link between the two states and is situated on National Highway-10. The court has mandated that no vehicles are allowed to park on either side of the bridge to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety.

Background of the Court Order

In April 2026, the High Court had previously ordered that parking for any light or heavy vehicles would be prohibited on both ends of the bridge. However, during a recent court hearing, it was reported that vehicles were still being parked in these restricted areas despite the existing order. The court expressed concern over the lack of compliance and emphasized the need for immediate action to stop this practice.

Strict Enforcement Instructions

During the hearing on July 30, a division bench of the High Court directed the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to coordinate with officials from both the Sikkim and West Bengal governments. The court specifically instructed the officers-in-charge of the Rangpo police stations to ensure the no-parking order is followed strictly.

Authorities have been ordered to keep the bridge clear of any parked vehicles at all times. The court has made it clear that if any vehicle is found parked illegally, it will be considered a violation of the court's directive.
