Sikkim Government Provides Relief to Jalpaiguri Tunnel Victims

The government of Sikkim has distributed financial aid to the families of individuals from Jalpaiguri who died in a tunnel accident in the Samardung area of Namchi district. Officials held a special program in Jalpaiguri to ensure the families received their compensation without needing to travel to Sikkim.

Distribution of Relief Funds

Following instructions from Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, the state government provided ex-gratia payments to the affected families. Anupa Tamling, the District Collector of Namchi and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Namchi, represented the Sikkim government at the event. The administration distributed ₹4 lakh to the next of kin for each of the 11 deceased individuals from Jalpaiguri. This initiative was organized in coordination with the Jalpaiguri District Administration to simplify the process for the bereaved families.

Support from Local Representatives

Several local officials and representatives attended the distribution program to support the families. The event was held in Jalpaiguri to provide immediate financial assistance to those impacted by the tragedy. Key attendees included Poona Bhengara, MLA for Nagrakata Assembly Constituency, and Shukra Oraon, MLA for Mal Assembly Constituency. Dr. Haris Rashid, the Additional District Collector of Land and Land Reforms for Jalpaiguri, was also present during the formal handover of the relief funds as reported by Hindustan Samachar.
