Security forces have launched intensified operations in Manipur's Kamjong district following a series of violent incidents, including a fatal ambush on October 17, 2026. Joint patrols involving the Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, CRPF, CoBRA, and the Border Security Force are currently conducting combing operations across vulnerable mountain passes and border areas to restore stability and track armed suspects.
The escalation follows a violent exchange of fire near Chassad village on October 17, which resulted in the death of Seikhohao Haokip. Four others, including Chassad village chief Thangjahou Haokip and Phungtha village chief Seipao Haokip, sustained bullet injuries. Additionally, the Eastern Command Naga Village Guard reported that a patrol team was attacked on October 15 near Huimin Thana along the Indo-Myanmar border, allegedly by Kuki National Army-Burma militants and Village Volunteers of Eastern Zone, leaving a civilian defense volunteer injured.
ADGP Lhatoo confirmed on October 19 that authorities are treating the situation with utmost seriousness. Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has condemned the violence and directed immediate security measures, urging public cooperation. This follows a formal request for increased deployment made previously by Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing to Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas. In response to the violence, the Working Committee of Kuki Civil Society Organisations has initiated a total shutdown of National Highway 202, scheduled to run from October 18 through October 22, 2026. The Committee on Tribal Unity has also called upon the central government to increase protection for Kuki villages situated along the international border, citing concerns over current security arrangements.
