The Northeast Frontier Railway will start piling work in October 2026 for the second Saraighat rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra River in Assam. The project is given to Larsen and Toubro for execution and costs ₹1,473.77 crore. The project was sanctioned in the 2023-24 financial year, and the Railway Board approved detailed estimates in February 2024 with final designs in March 2025. The Ministry of Railways also sanctioned doubling a 7.20 km railway section between Agthori and Kamakhya stations in 2024.
The new 1.3 km long bridge has a double-decker design with two railway lines on the lower deck and a three-lane road with a footpath on the upper deck. The project enters its execution phase after geotechnical investigations and engineering designs are completed. Challenges like land acquisition, encroachment removal, and utility shifting are resolved with help from the Assam government and local administration.
Technological integration includes advanced digital monitoring and bridge instrumentation systems for structural safety. The project is monitored by the Railway Board and coordinated with the National Highways Authority of India for road approaches with a completion target of December 2029.
