Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid recently addressed a press conference in Guwahati to raise serious concerns about government actions in Assam. He stated that stripping evicted people of their voting rights is unconstitutional and violates the law. Khurshid targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party over various issues including the National Register of Citizens and recent events in the region.
Khurshid raised questions about the autonomy of the Election Commission and decisions made by the Chief Election Commissioner. He also discussed the National Register of Citizens process which was started under former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
He pointed out that lakhs of people are still waiting for identity cards and rejection slips to file appeals.The Congress leader criticized the widespread eviction drives across different areas of Assam. He mentioned that removing homes and denying displaced persons voter registration goes against Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution.
He also highlighted data regarding police encounters and deportations that took place in the state over the last few years.
