Four more towns in North Bengal will soon get underground power supply to remove messy overhead wires. The World Bank has approved a loan of around 513 crore rupees for this major project in the region.
Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Jaigaon, and Balurghat will receive funds of 151 crore, 130 crore, 100 crore, and 132 crore rupees respectively for the first phase.
Tenders have been issued for all four towns and construction work is targeted to start within the next three months. Previous underground work was done in Cooch Behar and Siliguri.
Underground power line work in 19 wards of Siliguri started in the year 2024 and is now in its final stage.
Siliguri received an extra 80 crore rupees from the World Bank to take lines underground on both sides of Hill Cart Road across the Mahananda river, with completion targeted by November. Hill towns like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, and Mirik also have a DPR ready with a funding request of 377 crore rupees sent to the World Bank.
