New Jalpaiguri Station Hawkers Demand Rehabilitation

Hawkers at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station have started a protest against the ongoing station modernization project. The stall owners are demanding proper rehabilitation after the railway administration launched an anti-encroachment drive to clear the station premises. Hundreds of hawkers took to the streets on Friday to voice their concerns regarding their future livelihood.
Hawkers Seek Support from Local Representatives
Protesting hawkers visited the office of Siliguri MLA and Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh to submit their grievances. They also visited the residence of Dabgram-Fulbari MLA Shikha Chatterjee to seek assistance. Although both representatives were not present, the hawkers submitted their concerns to the available staff members at both locations.
Concerns Over Livelihood and Daily Fines
According to the hawkers, they have been running their businesses near the station for many years to support their families. They reported that the Railway Protection Force (RPF) is currently stopping them from operating and imposing daily fines. The hawkers stated that their primary source of income is now under threat due to these ongoing actions by the railway authorities.
Stance on Station Modernization
The protesters clarified that they do not oppose the development or modernization of the New Jalpaiguri station. However, they believe that their livelihoods should not be sacrificed in the process of development. Many families are currently facing a financial crisis as they are unable to carry out their daily business activities near the station area.
Official Response on Rehabilitation
Addressing the situation, MLA Shikha Chatterjee stated that the issue will be taken up with seriousness. She mentioned that the administration will look into the matter to see how the hawkers can be supported. Discussions will be held with railway officials to determine if a proper rehabilitation plan can be arranged for those affected by the project, as reported by Hindusthan Samachar.
