Nine Dead in Massive Kolkata Hotel Fire Incident

A major fire broke out at a five-storey building housing multiple hotels on Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata early Wednesday, August 19, 2026. The incident resulted in nine confirmed deaths and several injuries. Most of the victims were Bangladeshi nationals visiting the city for medical treatment, and one child is among the deceased.
Rescue and Emergency Response
Firefighters and Disaster Management teams arrived at the scene between 1:45 AM and 2:00 AM to control the situation. Five fire tenders were used to extinguish the blaze, and rescuers successfully evacuated approximately 80 people from the building. Six other individuals were taken to a nearby hospital for medical care. Cooling operations are currently underway at the site.
Investigation into Safety Violations
State authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, with initial reports suggesting an electrical short circuit or an air-conditioner explosion. The owner of the building is currently missing, and the police have registered a case at the New Market police station to begin legal proceedings. State Fire Department Minister Kaushik Chowdhury has raised concerns regarding the building's failure to follow fire safety norms. Updates on official safety standards and regulations can be found on the West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services website.
