The National Investigation Agency has filed a chargesheet against five accused persons in connection with the recovery of an IED planted by ULFA (I) in Guwahati. The case is related to an explosive device found at Motilal Nehru Road in the Panbazar area on August 15, 2024.
The chargesheet was submitted before the NIA Special Court at Guwahati against five individuals. The accused include Paresh Baruah, who is the Chairman and self-styled Commander-in-Chief of the proscribed terrorist organisation ULFA (I), along with Kanak Ch Gogoi, Jahnu Boruah, Bhargab Gogoi, and Sumu Gogoi. They face charges under various sections of the BNS 2023, the UA (P) Act 1967, and the Explosive Substances Act 1908.
The case involves a conspiracy to wage war against the Government of India through multiple planned IED blasts across Assam. The attempts were intended to cause death, injury, and property damage while threatening the unity, integrity, security, and sovereignty of the country. The investigation began after a case was registered at the Panbazar police station in August 2024 before the NIA took over the probe. The agency stated that further investigation in the matter is currently continuing.
