NHRC Seeks Report After Fatal Factory Blast in Assam

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a deadly explosion at a metal processing factory in the Cachar district of Assam. The incident occurred on July 26 in the Pangram area, resulting in the deaths of four workers and leaving two others with severe injuries. The explosion was caused by the spilling of molten metal while over 100 workers were present inside the facility.

Commission Issues Formal Notices

The commission noted that the event raises serious human rights concerns regarding workplace safety. Consequently, the NHRC has issued formal notices to the Chief Secretary of Assam and the Superintendent of Police of Cachar district. These authorities are required to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks. The report must detail the current health status of the injured workers and clarify the compensation provided to the families of the deceased.

Investigation and Safety Measures

Following the tragedy, the state police initiated an investigation into the cause of the explosion. Authorities have arrested five individuals, including the factory owner and plant management personnel, on charges of negligence. Local residents and the families of the victims have alleged that similar safety hazards had been reported at the plant in the past. In response to these concerns, district officials have ordered a mandatory safety audit for all industrial units in the area.
