NFR Recreates Historic 146 Year Old Sukna Station

The Northeast Frontier Railway has recreated the historic 146-year-old Sukna railway station to preserve and promote the heritage of the world-famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Toy Train. This initiative comes amid record-breaking passenger footfall at the station.

The milestone was marked by cultural festivities including a ceremonial cake-cutting, traditional Nepali folk dance, and musical performances. Chetan Kumar Srivastava, General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railways, inaugurated a new photo gallery showcasing historic photographs of the DHR Toy Train. Each photograph features a QR code that allows visitors to access detailed information and history behind the pictures.

Special Services for Durga Puja Rush

Authorities announced additional train services ahead of Durga Puja to cater to the festive rush and ensure a smooth experience for travellers. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway currently operates eight pairs of daily joy ride services on the Darjeeling to Ghoom stretch and two direct services connecting New Jalpaiguri station with Darjeeling.

Rich History of the Mountain Railway

Built between 1879 and 1881, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is an 88-kilometre narrow-gauge mountain line. It uses zig-zag reverses and loops to climb from an altitude of around 100 metres at New Jalpaiguri to approximately 2,200 metres at Darjeeling. On December 2, 1999, UNESCO inscribed the railway as a World Heritage Site.
