The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has officially sanctioned ₹1,175.59 crore, rounded to ₹1,176 crore, for the construction of a new six-lane major bridge over the Teesta River at Sevoke in West Bengal's Darjeeling district. The project involves building an alternative bridge and approach roads spanning approximately 6.91 kilometers along National Highway-10.
The new corridor is designed to provide robust, all-weather, heavy-vehicle connectivity between Siliguri and the landlocked state of Sikkim.
It will serve as a critical alternative to the aging Coronation Bridge. The details are available in the official
source document.
The design features reinforced landslide protection, wider approaches, and disaster-resilient foundation piling.
This upgrade will strengthen connectivity to North-Eastern states and the Siliguri Corridor, facilitating the seamless movement of passengers, commercial freight, and essential defense supplies.
