New Six Lane Bridge Tender Released for Sevoke Coronation

A major step has been taken to build a new bridge near the historic Coronation Bridge in Sevoke as an alternative route. The authorities have issued a new tender for the construction of an additional major bridge over the Teesta River along with its approach roads. This project will start at kilometer 591.310 on NH-10 in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal.

Change from Four Lane to Six Lane Highway

Darjeeling Member of Parliament Raju Bista announced the development through an official press release. The most significant update is that the project will now be built as a six-lane highway instead of the previously planned four-lane road. This decision follows a recommendation from the Standing Committee on Finance of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways made in March 2026, which considered the strategic importance of the route and future traffic growth.

Improving Connectivity for North Bengal

Residents of the region have been waiting for this alternative bridge for a long time. The issuance of the new tender marks a key move in starting this project. The construction of this six-lane bridge is expected to significantly improve the traffic flow in the Sevoke and Teesta areas. It aims to strengthen the connectivity between the Darjeeling hills, the Terai region, and the Dooars, ensuring better infrastructure for the people living in these areas.

MP Raju Bista thanked the central government, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for prioritizing this project. He also expressed gratitude to the local residents for their patience and continuous support.
