The Northeast Frontier Railway is undertaking the Second Saraighat Rail-cum-Road Bridge Project along with the doubling of the railway track between Agthori and Kamakhya stations to improve transportation infrastructure in Assam. The project will strengthen rail and road connectivity across the Brahmaputra River and support the wider connectivity needs of the Northeast.
The project includes a 1.3-km-long Double-Decker Rail-cum-Road Bridge over the Brahmaputra.
The lower deck will carry two railway lines, while the upper deck will have a three-lane road carriageway and a footpath. The 7.20-km railway-doubling project between Agthori and Kamakhya stations was sanctioned by the Ministry of Railways in 2024. Larsen and Toubro is executing the project. Geotechnical investigation works and major engineering design activities are complete, with piling works targeted to start from October 2026.
The new bridge will augment rail and road capacity across the Brahmaputra and facilitate smoother movement of passengers and goods. The project integrates with road approaches developed by the National Highways Authority of India to connect towards Jalukbari and the Agthori-side road network. The project is scheduled for completion within the next few years.
