A new bus terminus foundation stone was laid on Thursday at the Paribahan Nagar area in Matigara near Siliguri.
West Bengal Tourism and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr. Shankar Ghosh and
State Minister for Finance and Transport Arundam Barman jointly laid the foundation stone for the new bus terminus. The construction project is being taken up on the initiative of the
Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority.
The new bus terminus will be built on about 30 percent of the land in Paribahan Nagar. Once operational, it is expected to reduce the pressure of buses in different parts of the city and improve traffic jam problems.
The existing bus stand at Siliguri Junction will remain open for now. A decision regarding the Junction bus stand will be taken after the Matigara terminus starts functioning fully. Plans are also underway to make more effective use of the small bus stand at Naukaghat.
Several other projects will be implemented in the coming days keeping Paribahan Nagar at the center. State Minister Arundam Barman stated that the new bus terminus will help make the city traffic system more organized.
Further infrastructure projects will be initiated to make the urban transport system modern and well-structured.
