Nagaland villagers restore damaged school to save education

Residents of the Pungro sub-division in Kiphire district, Nagaland, have successfully restored a local primary school following severe structural damage caused by heavy monsoon rainfall. Situated near the remote Indo-Myanmar international boundary, the school faced potential closure due to administrative logistical delays in government repair efforts, which threatened to disrupt the education of dozens of rural students.

Community Effort and Repairs

In response to the crisis, the Pungro Village Council, alongside local student bodies and youth organizations, organized a volunteer shramdaan campaign to conduct the necessary repairs. Community members raised private funds to procure metal roofing sheets, fasteners, and waterproofing sealants, while local carpenters reconstructed furniture and framing.

Completion of Work

Over the course of several weeks of coordinated weekend work, volunteers completed the classroom repairs, fixed leaking roofs, and leveled the eroded playground. This community-driven initiative effectively prevented student dropouts and fostered a heightened sense of collective responsibility for public infrastructure in the border region.
