Mukutmanipur Dam Gates Opened Following Heavy Rain Forecast

Authorities have opened the lock gates of the Kangsabati reservoir in Mukutmanipur for the first time this season as a precautionary measure against heavy rainfall in South Bengal. Starting late Monday evening, officials began releasing water at a rate of five thousand cusecs per second through three gates of the dam. This step is being taken to manage water levels effectively before further rainfall occurs in the region.
Reason for releasing water
The water level in the Kangsabati reservoir reached nearly 430 feet by Monday afternoon due to continuous rainfall. With the maximum capacity of the dam being 434 feet, the irrigation department decided to release water to create space. The decision was prompted by the expectation of additional water flowing into the reservoir from the Kangsabati and Kumari rivers.
Alert issued for surrounding districts
The irrigation department has officially notified the district administration of West Medinipur and the lower catchment areas of Bankura about the water release. Local authorities have been instructed to remain alert and take necessary precautions to ensure public safety. Officials have stated that the current volume of released water does not pose a risk of flooding in the downstream areas.
Monitoring the situation
According to the Hindusthan Samachar report, the irrigation department is keeping a close watch on the reservoir water levels and the inflow from the rivers. The release of water is a controlled effort to maintain safety standards. Further actions will be decided based on the actual amount of rainfall and the flow of water into the reservoir in the coming days.
