Mizoram Train Services Resume After Heavy Rain

Train services on the Bairabi–Sairang railway section in Mizoram have officially resumed operations as of Thursday evening, October 1, 2026, following a temporary suspension triggered by severe weather conditions. The disruption began on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 30, 2026, when torrential rainfall caused waterlogging and a significant overflow of muck onto the railway tracks, specifically impacting the stretch between Kawnpui and Mualkhang.

Safety Measures During Suspension

According to Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the suspension was implemented as a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety. Railway officials confirmed that while the rainfall led to soil softening, there were no reported incidents of landslides or track subsidence.

Alternative Travel and Track Restoration

During the closure, the NFR deployed 20 buses at Bairabi to transport affected passengers to their destinations in Sairang and Aizawl, and several train services were subject to cancellation or short-termination during the disruption period. NFR engineering teams worked continuously to clear debris, conduct essential repairs, and perform thorough safety inspections of the line before normal operations were restored.
