Mizoram Rail Bridge Sets New Engineering Record

The construction of Bridge Number 144 on the Bairabi-Sairang rail line in Mizoram has reached a major engineering milestone. This structure is built across the deep valley of the Kurung River and stands as a significant achievement for railway infrastructure in the hilly regions of Northeast India. The bridge reaches a towering height of approximately 114 meters, which makes it about 42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar in Delhi.

Structure and Design Features

The bridge spans a total length of 378 meters and is supported by five piers and six spans. Engineers used specialized steel girders during the construction process to ensure the structure remains stable and resistant to seismic activity. These design features are essential for maintaining safety and durability in the challenging mountainous terrain where the bridge is located.

Part of a Larger Rail Project

This bridge is a key component of the 51.38-kilometer Bairabi-Sairang railway project. The entire rail line is designed to navigate difficult landscapes and includes a total of 45 tunnels and more than 140 bridges. This project represents a major advancement in the connectivity and engineering capabilities of the Indian railway network in the Northeast region.
