Mizoram Police Return 17 Stolen Mobile Phones Using CEIR Portal

Lawngtlai Police in Mizoram successfully returned 17 mobile phones to their owners on Monday, August 10, 2026, after the devices were previously reported as lost or stolen. The recovery was made possible through the use of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, which helps track missing hardware.

Process of Recovering Lost Devices

Local police officers at the Lawngtlai Police Station conducted a formal ceremony to hand over the recovered phones. Before returning the devices, the police performed strict legal verification, identity checks, and documentation to ensure each phone was returned to its rightful owner. The recovery process relied on the CEIR system, which is a platform developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to help law enforcement trace lost gadgets.

The CEIR system is designed to track mobile devices by using their unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers. This technology allows police to block missing devices across all telecom networks, making them unusable for unauthorized individuals. By monitoring these IMEI numbers, authorities can pinpoint the location of a phone if it is reactivated on a network, which significantly increases the chances of successful recovery.

During the event, police officials urged the public to be proactive regarding cyber safety. Residents are encouraged to report any missing or stolen mobile devices immediately on the Sanchar Saathi portal.
