Mizoram Landslide Kills Child And Injures Four People

A fatal landslide in Mizoram killed a child and injured four other people after heavy rain caused a hill to collapse.

Landslide Destroys Houses

The early morning landslide occurred in the border settlement of Vairengte in the Kolasib district of Mizoram. The disaster was caused by the collapse of saturated hill soil following persistent torrential rainfall. The incident resulted in the death of 14-year-old Zodingliana and left four other individuals injured. The landslide buried a double-storey timber house and an adjacent Assam-type dwelling, which together housed three families. Local village volunteers and police personnel conducted an emergency rescue operation amid heavy rain to extract survivors from the debris and damaged structural frames.

Medical Treatment and Rescue Operations

Two of the injured victims were in critical condition and taken to Silchar in Assam for urgent medical treatment. The remaining two injured individuals were stabilized at the Vairengte Community Health Centre. The disaster also caused significant damage to the vital highway linking Mizoram with the Barak Valley. This damage resulted in the stranding of commercial transport convoys carrying essential fuel and food supplies. District disaster response squads, supported by heavy earthmoving equipment, have been deployed to the site to clear the debris and implement stabilization measures for the vulnerable slope margins.
