Landowners in Mizoram have announced plans to stop the construction work of the Aizawl Bypass Road starting November 1, 2026. This decision comes as an ultimatum to the government over unpaid land compensation claims.
The Aizawl Bypass Road Western Side Land Owners Welfare Association stated that over 100 landowners have not received their payments. The association is demanding the immediate release of the second installment of Rs 7.4 crore. They also want the government to make a complete list of recipients public and to settle claims for stone quarry damages, crops, and plantations. On the other hand, the Public Works Department stated that only 17 individuals are awaiting payment totaling Rs 98.3 lakh.
The infrastructure project is being built under the Prime Minister's Development Initiative for North East Region with an allocation of Rs 500 crore. Project engineers warned that this delay will increase traffic problems in Aizawl. Government representatives have now started talks with the welfare association to resolve the issues and restart the construction work.
