Mizoram Kurung Bridge Sets New Engineering Record

The Kurung Bridge, officially known as Bridge Number 144, has become a landmark of modern infrastructure within the mountainous landscape of Mizoram. This structure is a vital part of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line and features a pier height of approximately 114 meters. This height makes it roughly 42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar in Delhi. The project was built by the Northeast Frontier Railway to safely withstand the seismic conditions common in this region.

Railway Connectivity in Mizoram

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the Bairabi–Sairang railway line on September 13, 2025. This project has successfully linked the state capital of Aizawl to the rest of the national railway network. According to the government of Mizoram, this rail link is expected to improve regional connectivity and boost the local economy.

Project Scale and Development

The entire Bairabi–Sairang railway project includes 48 tunnels and 142 bridges designed to support trade, tourism, and employment in the state. Construction of this line faced major challenges, including a tragic construction accident in 2023 that resulted in the loss of worker lives. Today, the railway line is fully operational, with both freight and passenger trains running regularly across the route.
