District administrations in Meghalaya launched waste-collection drives on tourism highways connecting Shillong, Sohra, and Dawki to support eco-tourism.
District administrations across East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi launched widespread waste-collection initiatives to maintain cleanliness on key tourist routes. These efforts were supported by community elders, youth clubs, and municipal bodies under the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign. On October 2, 2026, a major drive covered about 100 kilometers from Nongpoh to Sohra, while the Ri-Bhoi DPRO Office conducted another drive on October 1, 2026.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar urged public ownership of spaces and announced plans for scientific waste-management facilities in Jowai, Tura, and Nongpoh. The Shillong Municipal Board also received 24 new Solid Waste Collection Vehicles on October 2, 2026. To enforce standards,
the East Khasi Hills District Magistrate banned roadside cooking and littering under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, with violators subject to prosecution.
