Meghalaya Launches Automatic Appeal for Public Services

The Meghalaya Cabinet has officially approved an amendment to the Meghalaya Right to Public Services (MRTPS) Act, 2020, which introduces a new automatic appeal mechanism for online public services. This major policy change is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to improve the ease of doing business and enhance accountability within the administrative system. This new digital system is designed to automatically escalate delayed applications to higher authorities, removing the need for citizens to manually file appeals.
How the Automatic Appeal System Works
Under the previous rules, citizens had to go through a manual process to appeal for delayed public services. The new framework replaces this with a digital trigger that activates as soon as a service deadline is missed. Government officials must now follow strict service level agreements to ensure that all notified services are delivered to the public within the set time limits. By automating this escalation, the government intends to reduce the workload for applicants and ensure that no request is ignored due to bureaucratic delays.
Focus on Efficient Governance
This initiative represents a significant shift toward a more citizen-centric approach to governance in Meghalaya. By removing the requirement for applicants to intervene personally when a service is delayed, the state aims to eliminate redundant paperwork and reduce friction in the delivery of regulatory clearances. The primary goal of this reform is to ensure that public services are delivered efficiently and transparently to both citizens and businesses across the state.
