Three Medical Stores Closed Over Regulatory Violations in Mussoorie
Authorities in Mussoorie have stopped the sale and purchase of medicines at three medical stores following a surprise inspection that uncovered several serious irregularities. The action was taken under the Safe Drugs-Safe Life campaign, following directives from the Uttarakhand State Legal Services Authority and the District Legal Services Authority in Dehradun.
Inspection Findings and Store Closures
During the surprise check, officials examined various aspects of the stores, including medicine storage, valid licenses, the presence of pharmacists, and record-keeping. At Hammers Medicos, officials found the pharmacist absent and expired medicines stored alongside regular stock. Due to the lack of CCTV, poor hygiene, and the presence of non-medical items, the store was ordered to stop operations and faces potential license cancellation. Similarly, Agarwal Medicos was shut down after investigators found vaccines stored at improper temperatures, expired medicines mixed with stock, and evidence that medicines were being sold without a pharmacist present. The Optician Medical Store was also ordered to close immediately after inspectors found the pharmacist missing, the refrigerator broken, and expired drugs poorly managed.
Licensing and Compliance Issues
Other stores inspected during the drive were issued strict instructions to improve their standards. At A. James and Company, the store operator failed to produce a valid license, and records showed the license had expired without proper renewal documents. Consequently, all medicine sales at this establishment have been halted until the operator complies with legal standards. Meanwhile, the Pioneer Medical Store was allowed to continue operations after being issued warnings to fix issues regarding temperature monitoring for their refrigerator and the organization of expired stock.
Focus on Public Health Safety
District Legal Services Authority Secretary Seema Dungrakoti stated that the primary goal of these inspections is to protect the health and legal rights of citizens. The authority emphasized that the quality and safe distribution of medicines are directly linked to public health, and any negligence will not be tolerated. Officials noted that they are committed to monitoring health establishments, especially in tourist destinations, to ensure that all mandatory rules and safety protocols are strictly followed.
