Normal life across Manipur was severely disrupted on Tuesday as a statewide shutdown came into full effect following a violent attack. The protest was called by local groups after three individuals were killed and several others were injured in the Khongbal Tangkhul area. According to a news report, the strikes were initiated by the Native People's Committee Manipur and Iramdam Kanba Lup starting midnight on Monday, October 20, 2026.
Markets, educational institutions, banks, and private offices closed their doors, while
public transport was largely suspended. Protesters staged demonstrations across Imphal East and Imphal West districts by burning tyres in various areas. Demonstrators also attempted to transport the victims bodies to the residence of Chief Minister Y Khemchand, which led to
police intervention and tear gas to disperse the crowds. Essential services like healthcare, fire services, and media operations were given exemptions.
Leaders of the protest demanded the arrest of the perpetrators within 48 hours and called for the
resignation of top government officials, alleging failure to ensure citizen safety. Meanwhile, security forces including the CRPF, BSF, and Assam Rifles have
intensified combing operations in the Sunurok hill area using drones to track the armed groups. Separate shutdowns on National Highway 202 have also been enforced by civil society organizations.
