Manipur Rail Connectivity Improves With Khongsang Station

The Khongsang Railway Station in the Noney district of Manipur is now a key point for train travel in the hilly region. This station is a major part of the Jiribam to Imphal rail line project, which aims to connect more parts of the state through better infrastructure. Restoration of Passenger Train Services

On July 24, 2026, passenger train services officially resumed after being paused for three years. The Agartala to Khongsang Jan Shatabdi Express runs every Friday, covering a distance of 348 kilometers. The journey between Tripura, Assam, and Manipur takes about seven hours and 40 minutes. Additionally, plans were set for a cargo train to deliver essential goods to the station between August 9 and August 17, 2026.

Progress of the Jiribam to Imphal Project

Government officials report that the 111-kilometer Jiribam to Imphal railway project is nearly 90 percent complete. The line has already reached Khongsang, and work is moving forward to extend the tracks to Imphal by December 2028. Future development plans include extending this rail network to reach Moreh.

Northeast Frontier Railway officials are overseeing the construction to ensure the project meets its goals. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed the building of required facilities at the station and organized the supply of essential items to the state via train.
